Hey gang, welcome to another edition of the Occasional Orb! It’s October and it’s not only a great time to be a fan. This month, it’s a FUN time to be a fan! With Halloween right around the corner it’s time to dig in the closet and pull out the old cape and tights and have some fun.

While the holiday is traditionally associated with ghosts and goblins, pirates and princesses, witches and pumpkins, it is also a time for the fictional pop culture characters of the time to make an appearance. It is a time for those of us who are so inclined to dress up as the characters we idolize or dreamed of growing up to be.

For one night we can actually rip open that shirt, take off the glasses and be the Man of Steel. For one “knight”, we can put on the cape and cowl and run through the streets as the Dark Knight. For one night… just one night, we can all be kids again and play dress up.

Costume shops open up around this time and offer a wide variety of costumes, letting people dress up as doctors and nurses as well as fairies and elves. For the individual who is always busy and can afford it, this is a great way to take advantage of the holiday. For those of us more hardcore fans, the adventure of finding just the right pair of boots and gloves and the amount of time spent sewing and building our own custom costumes are all part of the excitement of the season. As cool as the $300 Batman Begins suit is, seeing a really well made custom Batman costume is sometimes cooler.

This summer's comic book and Sci-Fi movies are sure to have an influence on the types of characters you see this year. Batman, the Fantastic Four and Star Wars characters are a few of the costumes we will surely see this year. If we are lucky enough, Superman and a few X-Men characters will be out and about, excitedly awaiting their films next year.

So remember, as you put on the cape and buckle that belt, keep it safe and have fun! Watch out for the kids on the roads and be courteous to your fellow costumers. If possible, please take some photos for us here at the Orb and perhaps we can post some of those pictures in a future issue. Take care, have fun and I’ll see you guys next issue!
